Weeds

In the Northern Great Plains, Canada thistle and bindweed are weeds that pose existential threats to organic farming.  If they start taking over the field, farmers have almost no choice but to use chemical herbicides to manage them, which results in a loss of their organic certification.

We are working with the University of Manitoba, MSU and Montana Organic Research and Education (MORE) to evaluate weed management approaches using drone imagery and test a biological control for Canada thistle developed by MORE. We are starting to implement these new precision technologies across the Farm Lab to help farmers find viable ways to manage these weeds.
