February 3, 2026Managing soil fertility in regenerative organic farming is especially important because organic farmers don’t use chemical fertilizers to feed the plants—instead, they use legumes and other cover crops that feed the soil. This year, two of our research projects investigated unconventional inputs as potential additional tools for organic farmers looking to improve the nutrition and yield of their crops.
In collaboration with Dr. Jed Eberly at MSU’s Central Agricultural Research Center (CARC), we are evaluating microbial inoculants and crop rotations to improve soil fertility.
