Soil Fertility: Compost Applications

Managing soil fertility in regenerative organic farming is especially important because organic farmers don’t use chemical fertilizers to feed the plants—instead, they use legumes and other cover crops that feed the soil. This year, two of our research projects investigated unconventional inputs as potential additional tools for organic farmers looking to improve the nutrition and yield of their crops.

In partnership with Utah State University and the University of Wyoming, we are testing one-time, high-rate applications of compost to see how it affects crop yield and nutrition, as well as water retention, over multiple subsequent harvests.
