We continued to support our neighbors on the Rocky Boy Reservation with their food sovereignty program.
This is an effort to support our friends in growing their own food to sustain themselves, as well as to focus on some crops grown as medicine.
QI held a monthly "Grow Your Own Pizza” gardening class during the growing season, with attendance ranging from 30 to 80 members of the tribe. At each meeting, we discussed how to garden and forage for the native wild food. The class concluded with homegrown, freshly made pizza.
We also supported the reservation and involved the elementary school kids by helping with their community garden project. The biggest success this year was the growing and harvesting of over 5,000 pounds of potatoes.
Finally, after many years of effort and support, we were a part of the ribbon-cutting ceremony for a flour mill at Stone Child College at Rocky Boy. Now, the reservation is able to grow Kamut grain on the part of their farm we helped convert to organic, and mill it into flour to provide food as medicine to the tribe.
We encouraged and supported Rocky Boy in growing Kamut grain and Huckleberry Gold potatoes because both are known to help mediate diabetes, which is widespread in the community.
